Narra Read Aloud
Last updated 10 October 2026
Narra reads pages aloud with voices that run on your computer. Text only leaves your browser when you choose a Pro cloud voice.
Stays in your browser
Page, PDF and Google Docs text is extracted and read in your browser.
The natural on-device voice runs locally. Its voice model (about 90 MB) is downloaded once from Hugging Face, which sees an ordinary download request from your browser.
Settings, reading positions and voice choices stay in local storage.
Sent to our server
Pro cloud voices only: each sentence being read is sent to our server, which turns it into speech with OpenAI. The audio is cached for 30 days and reused for anyone who requests the same sentence and voice, without recording who asked.
A monthly character count for the Pro allowance.
Like every extension we make: your install id, your licence if you have one, usage counts for plan limits, and optional “Help improve” data if you turn it on. See the main privacy policy.
Other services
OpenAI: Text-to-speech for Pro cloud voices (sentence text only).
Hugging Face: Hosts the on-device voice model downloaded once by your browser.
Your choices
Uninstalling removes everything the extension stored in your browser. To have the data on our server deleted, email us.
We never sell your data or use it for advertising. Narra Read Aloud follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
